On Friday 26th March in support of The Black Country Festival poet Ian went to The Coseley School library to talk to some of the Year 7 and 8 AEN pupils
The Black Country Festival is designed to bring communities and people together to celebrate our shared cultures and traditions and to increase our sense of shared pride in our local history and culture.
Ian was particularly impressed with how the festival complemented the positive behavior we encourage throughout school by using The Coseley Way. Our school values are outlined by the word PRIDE. Personal Excellence, being proud of our achievements. Respect and value ourselves, each other and our school community. Independence, we think and act for ourselves taking responsibility for our own learning. Determination by striving to do our best in all aspects of school life. Enthusiasm in all aspects of school life and always aspire to excellence in all that we do at school and home.
This idea of shared pride in ourselves and our environment is very important to the staff and pupils of The Coseley School, pupils are encouraged to take a pride in themselves and their school, to be proud of their achievements. Pupils are incredibly proud to have raised £1154.52 for the Promise Dreams Childrens Charity in a sponsored walk; an event that the whole school community could participate in regardless of age or ability. Pupils were successful and achieved by completing the distance from Himley Hall to Wolverhampton Racecourse a distance of 9 miles.
Ian discussed with pupils his own difficulties with dyslexia, how it is possible to overcome educational difficulties making progress and achieving This is a project close to his heart, a chance to challenge the perception of under-achievement equated to additional educational needs. Our AEN staff go to incredible lengths to support pupils in academic subjects, doing competitions, projects and educational visits. Whilst taking the time to listen, as well as support in lessons
Our pupils were keen to share the poems they had written with him and they also took part in his lucky dip task, where they pulled an item from a bag and had to describe it, or make up a story about it without being sure exactly what it was they were holding.
This has led to a more long term collaborative event beginning in September when Ian will come into school and share experiences with AEN pupils to produce a body of poetry which reflects our pride in our shared traditions and dialect. Whilst celebrating the differences and unique features which contribute to make us unique as individuals.
